Luxembourg co-production Oto's Planet has won the Reflet d'Or for the Best Immersive Experience at the 2024 Awards of the Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) in Switzerland.
Oto's Planet, a virtual reality (VR) work directed by Gwenael François and produced by Julien Becker (Skill Lab Creative Studio), received this award at the closing ceremony of the 30th edition of GIFF; the Swiss film festival ran from Friday 1 to Sunday 10 November 2024.
The immersive work was chosen by an international jury of experts comprising Domenico La Porta (Belgium), Christopher Lloyd Salter (Switzerland) and Corine Meijers (Netherlands).
As reported by Film Fund Luxembourg, director Gwenael François described Oto's Planet as "the result of several years of exploration and passion for virtual reality", adding that "this award is a tremendous recognition of our work". He continued: "Receiving the Reflet d'Or at GIFF is an honour that testifies to the relevance and power of immersive as a means of artistic expression."
Supported by Film Fund Luxembourg, Oto's Planet is a majority Luxembourg co-production with Quebec (Canada) and France. Since its creation, it has been shown at some of the biggest festivals in the world, notably winning the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival this year and, more recently, the Grand Prix at the Beyond The Frame Festival in Tokyo.
"Oto's Planet is proof of the excellence of Luxembourg's immersive creation. This project embodies our ambition to support works that dare to push the boundaries of what is possible," commented Guy Daleiden, Director of Film Fund Luxembourg. "This award testifies to the strength of our national production on the international scene and the quality of the collaborations that allow such projects to see the light of day."
