Luxembourg's Roads and Bridges Administration has announced that it will carry out its annual road salting tests, set to take place from Tuesday 27 October to Monday 9 November 2026, ahead of the winter season.

To avoid disrupting morning rush-hour traffic, the motorway service and regional services will carry out the tests between 03:00 and 06:00. All units responsible for snow clearance and gritting operations on the national road network will take part.

The tests aim to check the proper functioning of all equipment, including facilities, vehicles and salt spreaders, as well as procedures for deploying maintenance teams and completing salting routes. They will also familiarise new Roads Administration employees with winter maintenance operations and help identify potential technical and operational problems.

To minimise environmental impact, the Roads Administration noted that, when roads are dry, crews will spread a "minimum" amount of salt (5 grams per square metre) over a maximum distance of five kilometres along a complete salting route. The tests will take place without snowploughs. If there is a risk of black ice, crews will apply the "appropriate" amount of salt.

The Roads Administration confirmed that its regular winter maintenance service will operate from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. Outside this period, it will provide a reduced service for salting operations.

The administration also reminded motorists that winter tyres are mandatory in Luxembourg when weather conditions require them.
