On Wednesday 14 October 2026, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) reported that one person had died in a residential fire in Ettelbruck, while two other major fires in Differdange and Herborn had mobilised emergency services overnight.
According to the CGDIS, firefighters responded to three major fires between Tuesday 13 October 2026 evening and Wednesday morning, involving approximately 120 firefighters in total.
At around 02:20 on Wednesday, a fire broke out in a terraced residential building in the centre of Ettelbruck. Around 50 firefighters attended the scene.
Reportedly, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a bedridden person trapped inside the building. Emergency medical teams from the Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service (SAMU) provided medical assistance but the person died from their injuries despite the efforts of the medics.
Medical teams also examined three other people at the scene. Emergency services called in a psychological support team to assist relatives and witnesses.
Firefighters continued extinguishing operations until the morning, supported by a specialised drone unit and the Logistics Support Centre.
At approximately 03:00, another fire broke out in a terraced house in Differdange, mobilising around 40 firefighters from five fire and rescue centres. The drone unit of the Operational Technological Support Group (GATO) also assisted firefighters in preventing the flames from spreading to neighbouring homes.
The CGDIS reported no injuries in Differdange, although the municipality had to arrange alternative accommodation for eight people.
The third fire occurred earlier, shortly after 19:00 on Tuesday, when a detached house caught fire in Herborn, in eastern Luxembourg. Around 30 firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the blaze, with no injuries reported.
Due to the high number of emergency operations overnight, the CGDIS activated its Operations Management Centre (CGO) and issued two local warnings through LU-Alert, advising residents in the affected areas to keep their windows closed and avoid the areas concerned.
