On Saturday 19 September 2026, Luxembourg's Interministerial Drone Assessment Unit provided an update following the temporary suspension of flight operations at Luxembourg Airport after unidentified and unauthorised drones were sighted over Findel the previous evening.
According to the authorities, Luxembourg Airport temporarily suspended operations on the evening of Friday 18 September 2026 after the drones were visually sighted within the airspace over Findel.
As a precautionary measure and in accordance with established safety protocols, the airspace was immediately closed to ensure the safety of passengers, flight crews, airport personnel and aircraft. A total of nineteen flights were diverted to other airports.
Airport operations resumed at approximately 01:20 on Saturday following two inspections which ruled out any immediate risk to aviation safety.
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden subsequently convened the competent ministers, including Luxembourg’s Minister for Defence, Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes and Luxembourg’s Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden, together with the relevant authorities and services.
The drone assessment unit also met to assess the situation and consider appropriate follow-up measures.
The government and competent authorities are continuing exchanges with their counterparts in neighbouring countries to gather additional information. At this stage, the available information does not allow definitive conclusions to be drawn, with authorities continuing to analyse the information collected and carry out checks in cooperation with international partners.
The authorities are also implementing follow-up and awareness-raising measures among the stakeholders concerned as part of their prevention and vigilance responsibilities.
The government stressed that it was closely monitoring developments and remained "fully mobilised" to ensure the safety and security of the population.
