On Tuesday 12 May 2026, the Directorate General of Immigration of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Home Affairs published its monthly overview of applications for international protection and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for April 2026.

International Protection

A total of 139 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in April 2026, compared to 128 in April 2025 and 119 in April 2024. Since the beginning of the year, Luxembourg has received 457 applications for international protection, down from 622 during the same period in 2024.

Authorities notified 146 decisions on international protection applications in April 2026, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 532. Of these, 141 resulted in the granting of refugee status and seven in subsidiary protection status. A total of 131 applications were rejected under the normal procedure, while 43 were rejected under the accelerated procedure.

According to the directorate, the highest number of applicants in April were from Syria (fifteen), followed by Eritrea and Ukraine (twelve each), Venezuela (eleven) and Algeria (ten). So far in 2026, most applications have come from Syrian nationals (53), followed by Eritrean (39), Sudanese (33), Algerian (31) and Afghan (30) nationals.

Temporary Protection

A total of 99 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in April 2026, up from 72 in March. Since the beginning of the year, the country has received a total of 317 temporary protection applications.

Authorities took 93 decisions on temporary protection applications in April, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 3,888. Of these, 268 resulted in the granting of temporary protection, while 3,583 concerned renewals.

Most applicants in April (92) were Ukrainian nationals, while seven applicants came from other countries. Ukrainian nationals have also represented the vast majority of applicants for temporary protection so far this year, accounting for 300 out of 317 applications (94.6%).
