"Buergbrennen" bonfires took place across the Grand Duchy this past weekend to chase away winter and welcome spring.
The spring-like weather gave weight to the idea that winter was truly going up in smoke.
Although traditionally held on the first Sunday after Carnival, Buergbrennen celebrations are now typically spread over two days (Saturday and Sunday) and across many towns and villages. They are often preceded by torchlit processions and feature community gatherings around food and drinks. In most cases, locals set fire to a cross, other times a castle/tower-like wooden structure.
The photo gallery here features snapshots from this year's Buergbrennen celebration in Sandweiler, which took place on Sunday 9 March 2025. About 400 people attended this festive event, organised by the Sandweiler Fire Department Association.
