On Saturday 22 June 2024, Luxembourg began commemorating the National Day (23 June) with numerous festivities taking place across the country.
The Changing of the Guard at the Grand Ducal Palace took place in the afternoon, officially beginning the celebrations of that evening. A torchlit parade, Fakelzuch, also went through Luxembourg City, from Place du Théâtre to Place Guillaume II; multiple organisations and local groups, such as sport clubs and bands, took part in walking together holding the lit torches.
The Grand Ducal couple visited Kelhen, located in the west of the country, and were greeted by multiple musical performances and officials. In attendance were: the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Claude Wiseler; the Minister of Families, Solidarity, Living Together and Welcoming, Max Hahn; the Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth; as well as the mayor of the commune of Kehlen, Félix Eischen. The Grand Ducal heir couple travelled to Esch-sur-Alzette where they greeted the crowds from the balcony of the Town Hall.
Just after 23:00, the fireworks processions lit up the sky above Pont Adolphe for a total of 17 minutes, attracting thousands of people. The city centre was full of DJs and performers stationed directly on the streets, inviting people to dance and enjoy the festivities with drinks and food.
Annual City Sound performances transformed the Glacis parking lot on the Glacis into a concert, attracting thousands of people. Among the performers this year were renowned musicians Robin Schulz and Jonas Blue. The stage will also welcome more musicians at night on the National Day itself.
23 June is a public holiday celebrating the birthday of the reigning monarch, currently Grand Duke Henri. The day is reserved for more official processions like the military parade and numerous visits from the Grand Ducal family and country officials.
