The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for the month of July 2023.
International protection
A total of 189 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in July 2023, down from 199 in June 2023 but up from 177 in July 2022.
197 decisions on asylum applications were taken in July 2023, up from 136 the previous month, with 102 applicants (up from 59 in June) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.
The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in July 2023 came from Syria (62), followed by Eritrea (43) and Venezuela (twelve).
So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 1,256 applications for international protection - up from 1,115 during the same period in 2022. Most applications came from Syrians (476; 37.9%), Eritreans (180; 14.3%) and Afghan nationals (73; 5.8%).
Temporary protection
A total of 142 people contacted the Immigration Directorate to express their interest in applying for temporary protection in July 2023, whilst 93 people actually applied for the status (up from 80 requests in June 2023).
More specifically, 81 Ukrainians and twelve individuals from other unspecified countries applied for this status in July 2023.
So far this year (as of 31 July 2023), Ukrainian nationals have made up 92.5% of all applicants (582 out of a total of 629) for temporary protection in Luxembourg. Moroccan and Tunisian nationals represented 1% (six people) and 0.8% (five people), respectively.
A total of 92 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in July 2023 (up from 78 in June), with 66 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (up from 61 in June).
