
The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for the month of May 2023.
International protection
A total of 219 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in May 2023, up from 207 in May 2022 and up from 173 in April 2023.
94 decisions on asylum applications were taken in May 2023, down from 96 the previous month, with 41 applicants (up from 27 in April) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.
The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in May 2023 came from Syria (348), followed by Eritrea (114) and Afghanistan (52).
By the end of May, Luxembourg had received a total of 868 applications for international protection so far in 2023 - higher than the 811 applications received at this time last year.
Temporary protection
A total of 91 people contacted the Immigration Directorate to express their interest in applying for temporary protection in Luxembourg in May 2023, whilst 58 people actually applied for the status (up from 49 requests in April and down from 160 in March).
May 2023 marked fourteen months since the temporary protection mechanism was activated at the European level in light of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This may explain why the majority of applicants for temporary protection last month came from Ukraine (54).
Overall, in the first five months of 2023, Ukrainian nationals represented 93.42% of applicants (426 people) for temporary protection in Luxembourg.
A total of 59 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in May 2023 (up from 48 in April and down from 163 in March), with 46 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (up from 42 in April and down from 141 in March).
In the first five months of 2023, Luxembourg received a total of 456 requests for temporary protection.
