Chocolate treats in the shape of Saint Nicholas;
Today, Monday 6 December 2021, children in Luxembourg are celebrating Saint Nicholas Day or Kleeserchersdag (in Luxembourgish).
Every year, in the run-up to 6 December, Saint Nicholas, or De Kleeschen, visits children in schools, bringing them treats. Primary schools in Luxembourg will remain closed today for this special occasion.
Towards the end of November, children leave their slippers outside their bedroom doors each night for the Kleeschen to bring them sweets and, during the night of 5 to 6 December, presents.
The Kleeschen is traditionally accompanied by the Houseker, a frightening helper who gives twigs to misbehaving children...
Saint Nicholas Day in Luxembourg also has a traditional speciality treat known as Boxemännchen. These man-shaped breads are made of fine brioche and are traditionally intended to be eaten for breakfast on the morning of 6 December.
