The Directorate of Immigration of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has confirmed that Luxembourg received a total of 150 applications for international protection (asylum) last month.

The number of people applying for asylum in Luxembourg in October 2021 increased from 135 the previous month and from 123 in October 2020.

A total of 160 decisions on asylum applications were taken last month, with 55 applicants (78 in September) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.

So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 1,000 asylum applications, up from 908 received by this time last year, but down from the 1,751 received in the first ten months of 2019.

The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in October 2021 came from Syria (46), followed by Afghanistan (32) and Eritrea (24). In addition, eleven Iraqi, nine Serbian and five Cameroonian nationals applied for asylum last month. The remaining 23 applications came from various other countries.

Of the 1,000 applications to date this year, 300 (30%) are from Syria, with 208 (20.8%) coming from Eritrea and 99 (9.9%) from Afghanistan.
