The Directorate of Immigration of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has confirmed that Luxembourg received a total of 101 applications for international protection (asylum) last month.
The number of people applying for asylum in Luxembourg in July 2021 dropped from 110 the previous month and rose from 94 in July 2020.
A total of 74 decisions on asylum applications were taken last month, with 22 applicants (compared to 64 in June) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.
So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 594 asylum applications, up from 537 received by this time last year, but significantly lower than the 1,196 received in the first seven months of 2019.
The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in July 2021 came from Syria (41), followed by Eritrea (23) and Afghanistan (5). In addition, five Sudanese nationals applied for asylum. The remaining 27 applications came from various other countries. Of the 594 applications to date this year, 203 (34%) are from Sudan, with 124 (24%) from Eritrea, with other countries each making up less than 6%.
