Luxembourg's Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development has confirmed that, as part of the surveillance of animal diseases, the Administration of Veterinary Services has detected several cases of distemper in fox corpses in recent weeks.
This disease is caused by a virus that can infect foxes, ferrets and also dogs, and is transmitted by direct contact. However, there is a preventive vaccination against this virus which can be performed in puppies from the age of 2 months.
the ministry has advised that care should be taken to avoid contact between dogs and potentially infected wildlife. This is why dog owners should keep their dogs under control and keep them on paths when walking in forests.
In this context, the Veterinary Services Administration has stressed that this virus is not transmitted to humans and therefore is not a risk to public health.
