The Grand Ducal Police have reported that a number of fires broke out over the weekend, one of which resulted in the death of a 46-year-old man in southern Luxembourg.

At around 02:16 on Saturday, a witness reported a fire in a cafe on Route d'Esch in Sanem. The fire, which originated in an apartment, quickly spread to the entire first floor. Upon arrival, the emergency services found the tenant, a 46-year-old Portuguese national, dead. Forensics were on site.

The fire department brought the fire under control around 03:30, although the adjacent street was closed to traffic until around 07:00 for the duration of the firefighting and clean-up work.

Around 14:30 on Saturday, another fire reportedly broke out in a residential building on Rue de Luxembourg in Tuntange in western Luxembourg. According to the fire department, the fire resulted from a gas cylinder explosion in the building's basement.

Whilst no one was injured in the incident, the building is no longer habitable, according to police reports. The road was closed to traffic for safety reasons and so as not to hinder the extinguishing work. The municipality thus intervened to find an adapted solution for the residents and to help with the traffic regulation.

Around 09:00 the previous day, the fire brigade reportedly responded to a fire in an apartment room on Rue Laurent Menager in Luxembourg City. Whilst the firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and no one was injured, the residents later (around noon) discovered that strangers had searched the apartment and stolen jewellery. Any witnesses should report to the Luxembourg police via tel.: 244-404100.
