The number of people applying for international protection (asylum) in Luxembourg in October 2019 rose to 208, up from 158 the previous month and from 178 in October 2018.

To date, 1,744 people have applied for asylum in Luxembourg so far this year, compared to 1,700 by October 2018 and 1,934 by October 2017.

Africa represented the continent with the largest number of asylum seekers (103), with 42 coming from Eritrea alone. 63 applicants came from Asia (37 from Syria alone), 22 from Europe (fourteen from Turkey) and 20 from the Americas (sixteen from Venezuela alone). So far in 2019, most applicants (462) have come from Eritrea, followed by Syria (234) and Afghanistan (130).

In total, 173 decisions on asylum applications were taken during October 2019, with 57 gaining refugee status. To date in 2019, a total of 1,919 decisions have been taken resulting in 570 refugees being granted asylum in Luxembourg.
