In the early hours of New Year's Day, two pedestrians were hit by a car while they were walking across a pedestrian crossing on the Boulevard Royal in Luxembourg-ville.

The incident happened at around 01:00. The two pedestrians were injured, one critically, and were brought to hospital by ambulance. According to the Grand Ducal Police, the driver of the car had driven through a red light, did not stop following the collision, and drove off.

A witness informed the police of the registration number of the car involved in the accident. A police patrol traced the car to Bascharage and ordered the driver to stop, whereupon the driver was breathalysed which he failed.

The public prosecutor ordered the driver's car to be confiscated and the driver to be arrested. He will be brought in front of a magistrate in court today.
