The Grand Ducal Police has confirmed that a 44 year-old man who had been rushed to hospital with severe burns after setting himself alight, has died in hospital.

On Tuesday evening, shortly after 18:30, the police from Beaufort were called to a domestic quarrel in the town between a separated couple. As soon as the police arrived at the scene, and before they had got out of their patrol vehicle, the man poured a flammable liquid over himself, in front of the door of his house, and lit it.

The police officers managed to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher and called for an ambulance to take the injured man to hospital where he was treated for his burns. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive they administered first aid on the man.

He was initially described as having life-threatening fire injuries. Shortly after 14:00 today, Wednesday, the police confirmed that the man died of his severe burns overnight.
