On 14 October 2016, the first foundations were laid for the Centre Hospitalier Neuro-Psychiatrique (CHNP)'s new Park project in Ettelbruck; the project has a total budget of €26,548,459.
The official launch of these construction works provides the clear message that architecture should meet the specific needs of people with a mental disability, as opposed to the other way round. Corinne Cahen, Luxembourg’s Minister of Family, Integration and the Grand Region, and Lydia Mutsch, Minister of Health, highlighted in importance of these new works for the park.
The project involves the demolition of two buildings, the construction of four new buildings and the restoration and renovation of six old pavilions. It is aimed to provide a service to 100 residents, 82 of which are adults and the other 18 are teenagers. In order to facilitate these people’s mobility and autonomy, it is necessary to reduce the obstacles between their lodgings and their daily activities. With the addition of new health facilities and lifts, along with other renovations, the hospital’s accommodation will be much more modern and better adapted to the needs of its residents.
The symbolic laying down of the first stone for this project on Saturday represents the concept’s development which was first considered in the 1990s when it became clear that facilities should better adapt to their residents’ needs.
