Following the decisions taken by the JAI Council in September 2015, and as part of the resettlement mechanism, Luxembourg will welcome a total of 557 people coming from Greece and Italy up to 2017.
On Thursday 13 October 2016, Luxembourg welcomed 20 asylum seekers (15 adults and 5 children). These people make up the second group of asylum seekers coming over from Italy.
Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs’ Immigration Office, Luxembourg’s Office for Reception and Integration (OLAI), the administration for the Ministry of Family and Integration, as well as the Luxembourgish Red Cross welcomed the newcomers at the airport.
OLAI will be in charge of the reception and social framework of these people as well as supporting them in daily life throughout their application process for asylum.
Asylum seekers sent from Greece and Italy for resettlement will continue with the asylum application process as foreseen under the law of 18 December 2015 regarding international and temporary protection.
Luxembourg is determined for this resettlement mechanism to work.
