On 5 October 2016, Luxembourg's Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure participated in the 50th anniversary of Luxembourg’s shipping register in Remich.
In his speech at the event, Minister Francois Bausch recalled that the Moselle has acted as a channelised waterway from the Vosges across the Rhine to the maritime waterways since May 1964. As such, he stated, “not only has the movement of goods on the Moselle steadily increased, but our shipping register has also been expanded and renewed.”
The Luxembourg register currently has very high quality standards regarding the safety of ships and the exchange between shipping companies and owners. As such, Minister Bausch has argued for a law which would regulate the requirements for passenger ships on the Moselle, namely for security reasons.
In addition, such a law would provide the basis for forward-looking property management on the Moselle route, defined by low charges. This also implies a positive development for container traffic, as the Moselle and Port Mertert become increasingly integrated in an attractive environment and with fairly good connections to international transport lines as well as industrial and commercial enterprises in the Greater Region.
Among those who also attended the ceremony were Karin de Schepper, the director of inland navigation in Europe, Patricia Brückner, the general secretary of the Moselle Commission, Adrien Kemp, ‘Schëfferveräin’ of St. Nicolas, Erwin Spitzer, the managing director of the bilge water drainage association, and serveral members of the maritime cluster and the Moselle Commission.
