On Tuesday 4 October 2016, Lydie Polfer, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, together with Simone Beissel, Alderman of the City of Luxembourg, Claude Seywert, CEO of Creos Luxembourg SA, and Paul Weis, CEO of LuxEnergie SA, performed the official opening of the new "ECCO" building located on the Boulevard F.W. Raiffeisen in the Cloche d'Or.
This construction, which is the result of close work between Creos and the City of Luxembourg, houses a Creos high-voltage transformer station and a heating plant operated by LuxEnergie.
The new shielded 65/20 kV substation (2 transformers of 50 MVA) will soon supply electricity to southern districts of the City of Luxembourg and the Ban de Gasperich. Fully integrated in a building which architecture reflects modernity, the ECCO station features a technology called "GIS" (Gas isolierte Schaltanlage), i.e. the electrical conductors are encapsulated in a gas-filled metal casing which acts as an insulator instead of ambient air. This technology has many advantages over the conventional construction method called open position: compactness, reliability and low maintenance.
As part of the social responsibility policy of the company, Creos pays particular attention to the integration of its transformer stations in the environment and the quality and reliability of its transmission and distribution.
The duration of the new building construction was 5 years. The new station replaces a previous one dating from the 70s which is to be dismantled soon.
