During a visit to the Grand-Duc Jean barracks at Herrenberg, Diekirch, Luxembourg’s Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Étienne Schneider presented plans for internal restructuring of the army.
On 20 September 2016, Minister Schneider revealed the changes to members of the Parliamentary Committee for External and European Affairs, for Defence, and for Cooperation and Immigration, as well as to members of the Parliamentary Committee for Security Forces.
The growing number of national and international missions along with the progressive increase in defence spending from 0.4% to 0.6% of GDP until 2020 has led to the need for organisational changes and a stronger collaboration between the armed forces and those in charge of defence in order to better tackle upcoming challenges.
This restructuring aims to make internal procedures more efficient by employing a more tailored work methodology. It also envisages changes to the organisational structure of both those in charge of defence and military personnel.
Currently located on Rue Goethe in Luxembourg, different army services will be partially relocated to the commend centre at the Grand-Duc Jean Barrack in Diekirch.
Minister Schneider stated that “in light of the continued development of military skills, we have reviewed and adapted our internal defence structures. These changes allow us to better meet both the national and international demands which the army must meet in the future.”
