The inauguration of the Fësch Haff aquaponics facilities in Grieveldange took place on Friday 16 June 2023, in the presence of Luxembourg’s Minister of the Economy, Franz Fayot.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the aquaponics facilities of the Fësch Haff company in Greiveldange Minister Fayot, visited the start-up whose research and development project benefits from aid to research from the Ministry of the Economy.

Fësch Haff is an innovative company that specialises in research around aquaponic technology, in order to develop modular aquaponic farms for sustainable food production adapted to the regional climate. The principle of aquaponics is that the excreta from fish farming are used as fertiliser for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, the filtered water then recirculating within the fish ponds to close the loop. Such a facility can therefore produce fish, fruit and vegetables, while building on synergies and the principles of the circular economy.

Supported by the Ministry of the Economy, the Fësch Haff project aims to develop a modular aquaponic farm model that is efficient in terms of the use of water, electricity and other natural resources. Such facilities may eventually be sold to farmers or other customers wishing to implement this production model. The economic model of the Fësch Haff company is based on three pillars: the sale of modular aquaponic farms, the operation and optimisation of these farms and the resale of the products of these farms (fish as well as fruits and vegetables).

During the visit to the facilities including a prototype greenhouse, Minister Fayot declared: “This agro-food production project is part of our efforts to support the transition towards a sustainable economy, in particular by advocating the active development of the circular economy in all areas.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development also supports this innovative project. Moreover, according to the ministry, the new agrarian law will have a chapter dedicated to aquaculture thereby aiming to financially support this sector in the future. Investment aid for fruit and vegetable crops has also been increased substantially. “Luxembourg still remains in deficit in the production of fruit and vegetables and of course also in fish. I hope that this project will open up new production prospects in Luxembourg, falling within the context of the circular economy,” said Claude Haagen, Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development.
