On Thursday 30 January 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister of Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, participated in the informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) of the European Union (EU), in Warsaw, Poland.

As reported by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the meeting began with a discussion on innovative solutions in the field of migration and asylum management. At the outset, Minister Gloden made a general remark on the need for EU member states to remain, as in the past, supportive and united, saying: “In the face of exceptional circumstances, we are ready to provide exceptional responses. Our common values unite us in the face of adversity and we must defend them.”.

In this context, he stressed the need to abolish internal border controls and to better control the EU’s external borders. Finally, Minister Gloden stated he is committed to working on the reform of the return system and stressed the importance of cooperation with third countries in order to achieve win-win cooperation with the EU’s partners.

During the working lunch, the Ministers discussed the Niinistö report, which contains recommendations on how to strengthen the EU’s overall resilience and preparedness for all kinds of crises and emergencies. To improve the speed of the Emergency Response Coordination Centre’s (ERCC) response, it could be useful to directly include national experts or to work with liaison officers. In view of the current challenges and threats to EU internal security, the Ministers took stock of the developments in crime and new technologies.

On the sidelines of the JHA Council, Minister Gloden met his Swiss counterpart for a bilateral interview.
