On Wednesday 22 January 2025, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, continued his bilateral discussions while attending the World Economic Forum (WEF), in Davos, Switzerland.
A ministry press release confirmed that Minister Bettel met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, the Foreign Ministers of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, Belgium, Bernard Quintin, and Croatia, Gordan Grlić Radman, as well as the Minister of State at the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Varsen Aghabekian.
According to the ministry, the meeting with the Palestinian representative and the President of the ICRC provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in Gaza, particularly with regard to the absolute necessity of full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, the enormous humanitarian needs in Gaza and the importance of the release of the hostages.
Minister Bettel also met with several leaders from the economic world, such as representatives of NTT Data and Barclays Europe.
According to the ministry , Minister Bettel highlighted Luxembourg's strengths as a country that attaches great importance to the rule of law, stability, openness, innovation and a long-term vision for a competitive and sustainable economy. With this in mind, Luxembourg will continue to be a reliable partner and play a constructive role on the international stage. Finally, Minister Bettel was invited to participate in a panel on the situation of members of the LGBTI+ community in the world, with, among others, the diver Tom Daley, the artist Jin Xing, and the finance specialist Antonio Simões.
