The Luxembourg Army has reported that the Grand Duke and the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, accompanied by Defence Minister Yuriko Backes, visited the military centre in Diekirch as well as the Luxembourg soldiers on duty at the Lagland military camp in Belgium on Friday 22 March 2024.
This visit marked an opportunity to illustrate major changes within the army with the new capabilities acquired and operationalised, such as the satellite anchor station and deployable satellite antennas, as well as brigade-level tactical drones. These changes go hand in hand with an adaptation of the education and training cycle of military personnel, noted the Luxembourg Army. After the welcome and a briefing by General Steve Thull at the Diekirch military centre, the guests had the opportunity to meet the Luxembourg troops and the Belgian and Luxembourg military authorities in Lagland.
The Lagland camp, located near Arlon, is the main training camp of the Luxembourg Army. Located near the border, this military field of approximately 26 km2 serves as an instruction, training and exercise site in the areas of tactics, urban combat, shooting and grenade throwing, Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) flights and off-road driving. The Lagland camp is also co-located with the General Bastin camp, the site planned for the future Belgian-Luxembourgish reconnaissance and combat battalion.
