As of Friday 31 December 2021, at least 108,386 Luxembourg nationals are living abroad, according to data from the national directory of registered persons (registre national des personnes physiques); this represents an increase of 12,482 compared to 95,904 nationals abroad reported on Thursday 31 December 2020.
Of these 108,286 Luxembourg nationals, 82,251 (75.89%) are living in Europe, followed by 14,547 (13.42%) in South America, 10,328 (9.53%) in North America and the remaining 1,260 (1.16%) acorss Asia, Africa and Oceania.
The top four destinations were France (29,663), Belgium (25,385), Germany (18,621) and Brazil (14,105), with more than 10,000 nationals living in each of these countries.
The United States (9,501), Switzerland (2,525) and the United Kingdom (1,552) are the next three countries with over 1,000 Luxembourg nationals each.
Outside Europe and Americas, Australia (181) followed by United Arab Emirates (122) had the highest Luxembourg nationals.
This data is produced by the Luxembourg Government IT Centre (Centre des technologies de l’information de l’Etat - CTIE), which tabulates countries with at least ten Luxembourg nationals as residents as of 31 December 2021. The numbers above are indicative as there may be cases of death, birth or people moving to another country without contacting the Government IT Centre.
