ArcelorMittal steel will be helping to pave the way for France's first urban cable car through the provision of two D25 mm haul ropes and four D50 mm full lock coil ropes.

The Luxembourg steel and mining company is the sole supplier of the ropes and constitutes one of just two producers in Europe which enables data transmission through the integration of optic fibres in full-lock coil. It will therefore be contributing steel to the cable car network being constructed in the French city of Brest.

Cable cars have grown in popularity as a mean of navigating cities the world over, such as Rio de Janeiro, London and Singapore, and with the commuter population of Brest due to grow by 4,000, the cable car will provide an important means of transporting commuters across the Penfeld river. It is also expected to improve access to the right-hand bank of the river and act as a gateway between the economic and residential centres of the two banks.

The cable car was selected as the least expensive, safest and most environmentally-friendly option from amongst the alternative transport methods considered. It is expected to be completed in the second half of the year.
