Details:

The first edition of the regional final of the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition will take place on Saturday 18 January 2020 at 09:00 at Lycée Ermesinde in Mersch, as part of the Benelux-League.

The FLL is an international competition organised by the US non-profit organisation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO Group. The competition offers teams of young participants to solve problems encountered in a given scientific field using a professional approach: research, exchange, drawing, construction and testing. For the 2019/2020 season, the subject is City Shaper.

Since the start of the school year, young people aged 9 to 15 have considered the chosen theme by working on a research dossier. At the same time, they produced and programmed a LEGO Mindstorms robot made up of “intelligent” LEGO bricks (equipped with sensors and automations), capable of carrying out a series of tests in a limited time. This experience is in line with the ministry's aim of making coding a basic skill taught in primary school.

After several weeks of preparation, ten Luxembourg teams, made up of four to ten students and their coaches, from cycle 4 of primary education and the lower classes of secondary education, are ready to compete in the categories of robot, design and programming, research project and team spirit.

The two best teams will qualify for the final of the Benelux-League which will take place on 25 January 2020 in Breda in the Netherlands.

The event is organised in Luxembourg by the Coordination Service for Educational and Technological Research and Innovation (Service de coordination de la recherche et de l'innovation pédagogiques et technologiques or SCRIPT), in collaboration with the Lycée Ermesinde Mersch (LEM).

The competition is open to spectators and entry is free.
