Details:
The Nature Park Our (Naturpark Our) will host a free public International Bat Night event from 18:00 near the church in Bastendorf on Saturday 11 July 2026.
The event is being held in cooperation with the Municipality of Tandel, the Nature and Forest Agency and the National Museum of Natural History as part of the annual European Bat Night initiative launched by EUROBATS (the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats), which has been held across Europe for the past 29 years.
The Nature Park Our noted that all bat species found in Luxembourg are protected by law, as their populations are considered to be in an unfavourable conservation status. The event aims to raise public awareness of bat conservation and the importance of protecting their habitats.
Programme
Bat Night in the Our Nature Park is a family-friendly event. Visitors will have the opportunity to contribute to bat conservation or simply learn more about these nocturnal mammals.
18:00 – Activities for children aged 4 to 14 will include storytelling about bat myths and facts, games, arts and crafts, colouring activities, a bat quiz, building a bat box and the distribution of seeds for night-blooming plants. Information stands will also provide advice on bat- and insect-friendly gardens and bat roosts in and around buildings.
19:30 – Luxembourg's national bat coordinator, Jacques Pir, will give a presentation on bat ecology, threats and conservation. The National Museum of Natural History will also present its current bat research project.
Around 21:30 – Visitors will be able to watch a live stream of the evening emergence of the large greater mouse-eared bat colony in Bastendorf, with an opportunity to ask questions during the broadcast.
Around 23:00 – The programme will conclude with a guided Bat Walk led by a bat expert, offering insights into bat behaviour and practical advice on observing bats both visually and with ultrasound detectors.
According to the Nature Park Our, the event aims to improve public understanding of Luxembourg's native bat species and their habitats, while highlighting the importance of protecting the sites they depend on, including forests, old habitat trees and roosts in buildings and underground spaces.
