Each year on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people in Luxembourg celebrate Bretzelsonndeg (Pretzel Sunday).
Men in Luxembourg traditionally offer their female love interest a pretzel. Three weeks later at Easter, if the feeling is mutual, the woman returns the favour by offering the man an Easter egg. If she is not interested, she gives him an empty basket instead. In leap years, the roles are reversed. The sweet pretzels (Bretzelen) sold today typically consist of puff pastry, made with eggs and butter, covered in fondant icing and almond flakes.
