The Greek Cinema Club has announced two screenings of the award-winning Greek film Animal (2023), directed by Sofia Exarchou, in the original Greek version with English subtitles; it will be presented in Ciné Utopia in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg on Tuesday 23 September at 19:00 and Wednesday 24 September at 21:00.
Winner of the Best Feature Film award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, Animal has participated in over 50 film festivals worldwide and collected more than 20 awards, including Best Performance at the Locarno Film Festival.
The film is a realistic, ruthless portrait of the world of tourist entertainers at an all-inclusive Greek island resort, representing hidden struggles of those working behind the scenes. Paper decors, glossy costumes and dance shows fill the stage. As summer intensifies and the work pressure builds up, nights become violent and Kalia's struggle is revealed in the darkness; but when the spotlights turn on again, paper decors, glossy costumes and dance shows fill the stage and the show must go on.
Director Sofia Exarchou, born in Athens, went from studying electrical engineering to becoming an award-winning film director. She is best known for her debut film Park (2016), which won the New Directors Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Since then, the film has been screened and received awards at numerous international film festivals, including Rotterdam IFF, BFI, Thessaloniki IFF (Best Actress & Best Greek Film), European Film Festival Palic (Best European Film) and the Greek Film Academy Awards (Best First Feature & Best Sound). Animal is Sofia's second feature film.
