The City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) recently inaugurated the renovated "Bambësch" forest playground in the capital.

Following a VdL Municipal College decision in 2020, the large Bambësch forest playground, which was deemed to no longer correspond to current safety standards, has been completely redesigned in what the City of Luxembourg has described as "a contemporary and inclusive spirit".

The VdL forestry department (Service Forêts) developed the concept based on the following four ideas: generational continuity of adventures and memories; discovery and adventure in the forest; reference to the old town; learning about science. The new playground project was implemented by the German design office Schwarze und Partner, Landschaftsarchitekten mbB. Historical monuments and events, legends and customs have been integrated into the design.

The land is laid out in two different areas. The main area, corresponding to the surface of the former playground, is the main attraction of the site. The northern part has been newly converted into a playground and functions as a transition zone between the main surface and the forest. This new area was installed parallel to the existing path and leads to the existing basketball court. The playground has been divided into several sectors, each adapted to children's specific age categories.

Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is ensured on stabilised ground areas and for wheelchairs on certain parts fitted out with wood shavings specially adapted for this purpose.

A large picnic area, including beach chairs and tables, has been set up under the trees to the south of the entrance. This area is partially covered with textile veils over an area of approximately 75 m2 and will also be used for small concerts or shows. The old wooden carousel has been reinstalled near the entrance.

The "Dräi Eechelen" fortress forms a major feature of the playground with its three towers similar to those of the original. It also features three slides and various climbing nets, among other elements.

Regarding materials, much of the installation is constucted of stone whilst the playground games/attractions are made of wood. The interior spaces are designed in different materials to allow sensory experiences for children.

As for mobility, a new AVL municipal bus line serving the Bambësch playground launched on the occasion of the official opening on Wednesday 24 May 2023.

Works began on this project in September 2022 and came to an approximate cost of €3,754,659 (including VAT).
