Luxembourg has fallen two places in the EF English Proficiency Index (EPI) 2020; the country now ranks 11th.

The EF EPI is the world's largest ranking of countries and regions by English-language skills. Based on the test results of over 2 million adults in 100 countries and regions, this year's number one was once again the Netherlands, with a score of 652 (out of a total of 700). Four of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway) completed the top five. Tajikistan and Iraq had the lowest scores, with 381 and 383 respectively.

Whilst Luxembourg remained in the top twelve (countries with a "very high" proficiency of English), it fell from 9th place in 2019 to 11th place in the EF EPI 2020, with a score of 610. In relation to neighbouring countries, the Grand Duchy outranked France (28th) but ranked lower than Germany (8th) and Belgium (9th). At the European level, Luxembourg ranked 10th (out of 34 countries).

The EF EPI 2020 took into consideration the test results of 2.2 million adults (54% female, 46% male; median age: 26) from 34 European countries, 24 Asian countries, nineteen countries in Latin America, thirteen African countries and ten countries in the Middle East.
