On Wednesday 29 October 2025, Luxembourg’s Cactus Group will open its new multifunctional shopping centre in Esch/Lallange, which is expected to become the company’s third most visited location in the country.
The 7,000 m² development represents a new generation of Cactus sites, combining retail, leisure and residential spaces in one location.
Laurent Schonckert, Managing Director of Cactus, told Chronicle.lu that the Esch/Lallange site stood out for its “multifunctional concept”, including “not only the classical supermarket but also a Galleria with fifteen tenants, a fitness centre, a crèche for children and 67 residential studios and apartments.” He added that Cactus had been present in Esch for more than fifty years and enjoyed “a strong connection with the local community, including residents of Esch, Schifflange, Mondercange and Foetz.” Commenting on the existing Cactus store located nearby, he said that “several plans” were under consideration for the site, although “no final decision” had yet been made.
The new centre features a 75-metre line of fresh food counters, a drinks department and a Blumen boutique offering on-site flower arrangements. The complex also includes a 600 m² beverage shop and a spacious Galleria with fifteen tenants. Around 220 people will work on site, with approximately 100 additional jobs created through partner businesses.
Cactus has a long-standing presence in Esch, where it opened its first local supermarket in 1972 - then the largest food retail space in Luxembourg, with a 2,300 m² sales area.
Véronique Schmitt, Director of Communications, Marketing and CSR at Cactus, told Chronicle.lu that the new site would become “the third largest Cactus location after Belle Étoile and Bascharage.” She added that the company was “excited to welcome customers from across Esch and neighbouring areas,” noting that “many have been waiting for this opening and are eager to explore the new space.”
