On Wednesday 30 September 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and Social Security and the Directorate of Health announced the launch of a new campaign for Pink October, the international breast cancer awareness month, aimed at highlighting the importance of organised screening.
According to the ministry, this year’s campaign is based on the testimonies of eight women aged between 41 and 74, who share their experience of mammography.
Through a series of videos and posters distributed throughout Luxembourg, these eight women describe in their own words their journey, their concerns, their motivations and the importance they now attach to screening.
By giving a voice to those directly concerned, the campaign aims to highlight that behind every mammogram there is a woman and a story. These authentic testimonies are intended to encourage the women concerned to participate in the Mammography Programme, which makes it possible to detect potential cancer at an early stage, when treatment options and the chances of recovery are highest.
“Early screening offers women the best chances of recovery. Through this campaign, we also want to give women a voice and highlight that their experiences must be heard,” stressed Luxembourg’s Minister of Health and Social Security Martine Deprez.
The ministry noted that an evaluation of Luxembourg’s organised breast cancer screening programme, carried out in collaboration with the National Cancer Registry, highlighted convincing results. In 2025, 26,131 mammograms were performed as part of the Mammography Programme. Of these, 2,304 required additional examinations and 146 led to a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
The systematic double reading of images by two independent radiologists strengthens the reliability of screening and increases the likelihood of detecting an abnormality at an early stage.
In Luxembourg, the Mammography Programme is aimed at women aged between 45 and 74, whether residents or cross-border workers, who are affiliated with Luxembourg social security at the time of the examination. It allows them to receive a mammogram every two years, covered at 100%, with no upfront payment. Financial coverage under the programme is conditional on valid affiliation with Luxembourg social security on the date the examination is carried out.
Affiliated non-residents can also participate in the programme by contacting the Screening Programmes Coordination Centre directly on 24775-550 or at mammographie@ms.etat.lu.
Throughout October, teams from the Directorate of Health will meet members of the public at information stands set up in several hospitals, shopping centres and markets across the country.
The Directorate of Health added that the teams will answer questions from the public, explain how the Mammography Programme works and distribute information materials. These activities are being carried out in collaboration with partners involved in the fight against breast cancer, including Fondation Cancer, Europa Donna Luxembourg and Think Pink Luxembourg.
