On Friday 4 July 2025, the Luxembourg environmental non-profit organisation Mouvement Ecologique asbl issued an open letter to the Luxembourg government urging a ban on PFAS-based pesticides at national and EU Levels.
The letter addressed to Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, Martine Hansen, and Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, also featured a direct appeal to Luxembourg’s Members of the European Parliament.
Mouvement Ecologique said it had issued the letter “in light of rising evidence from across Europe – including Luxembourg – that toxic ‘forever chemicals’ such as PFAS and its breakdown product TFA, are contaminating both the environment and human populations” and warned that “this ongoing pollution threatens to push planetary boundaries beyond safe limits. Each further use of these chemicals brings us closer to irreversible environmental damage”.
The organisation stressed that Luxembourg must use its voice at the EU level to support the phase-out of these harmful substances and fully exercise its rights as a Member State to protect people and the environment.
On Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 July 2025, the European Commission’s proposal to end the approval of the active pesticide substance Flutolanil will come under discussion in the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed. Flutolanil, a PFAS-based chemical used widely in agriculture to control fungal infections, is known to contribute significantly to TFA contamination. In addition to supporting the commission’s proposal, Mouvement Ecologique called on Luxembourg to ban all remaining PFAS-containing pesticides still authorised at European level and urged the Luxembourg government to immediately withdraw all national authorisations for PFAS-based pesticides.
The organisation believes that the majority of citizens support stronger protection for human health and the environment – and therefore oppose the continued use of such dangerous substances.
