On Monday 4 September 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of Energy and Spatial Planning published the latest results of efforts to reduce natural gas consumption in Luxembourg.

In order to ensure the European Union's supply security for the upcoming winter and to prepare accordingly, a one-year extension of the measure targeting a voluntary 15% reduction in natural gas demand has been approved at the European level.

This target forms part of the European Union's (EU) voluntary target for member states to reduce their natural gas consumption by 15% compared to the reference period from 2017 to 2022.

In August 2023, the reduction in natural gas consumption corresponded to approximately 33.4% compared to the reference period of the years 2017 to 2022, thus on track to meet the EU Member States' natural gas demand reduction target.
