The energy department of the Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has published key figures for the electricity and natural gas markets for the year 2020.

These figures particularly revealed that 1,046 customers changed electricity supplier in 2020. The supplier change rate for 2020 was 0.7% in terms of volume and 0.3% in terms of number of customers.

As a result of the COVID-19-related lockdown, the Grand Duchy's electricity consumption in 2020 fell by 4.5% from 2019, recording a total consumption of 6,262 GWh (gigawatt-hour). The report indicated that 19.3% of consumed electricity was produced in Luxembourg itself. National production injected into the network in 2020 reached a total of 1,208 GWh, of which 81% came from national production based on renewable energy sources.

The ILR also noted that the production of electricity based on renewable energy sources increased by 22%, from 802 GWh in 2019 to 979 GWh in 2020. This increase is attributed to an increase in wind power production, photovoltaic production as well as electricity production based on biomass last year.

Regarding the natural gas market, the report revealed that annual consumption has fallen more sharply due in particular to the impact of lockdown measures and milder temperatures.National consumption fell from 8,880 GWh in 2019 to 8,090 GWh in 2020, corresponding to a drop of 9%. The number of customers who changed natural gas supplier remained at a low level, i.e. 191 customers, in 2020.

Finally, key figures confirmed that electricity prices for residential customers increased by 10% in 2020, an increase communicated by the ILR in February 20201. Natural gas prices for residential customers decreased by 10%.
