The resumption of the traditional Ireland Stand (at the International Bazaar) Table Quiz took place yesterday evening at the Centre Culturel in Luxembourg-Hollerich.
On Thursday 13 October 2022, the long-awaited return (after two years disrupted by COVID-19) had been eagerly awaited and took place in person with no less than 20 teams – of six people each – participating.
The event kicked off slightly earlier than usual as the room was only available until 22:00; that meant that Quizmaster Philip Taylor had to be quick with the questions – ten rounds of six questions each, with the usual topics from General Knowledge and Current Affairs to Entertainment, Art and Literature, and Science and Sport.
The questions were tricky for some, easy for others but, like in all such team events, it is not about any individual, rather the collective knowledge (and camaraderie) of each team.
Questions included: What is a Katana? (a Japanese Sword); What doe LIV stand for (regarding golf)? (54 in Roman numerals; the number of holes played); What was the name of the café in Friends? (Central Perk); What is the coldest capital city? (Ulan Bator, Mongolia); In which US state was Andy Warhol born? (Pennsylvania)…
At the end of the 60 questions, there was a three-way tie for first place (on 49 points), with another four teams tied on 46 points. The winning teams (6. The B-Team; 15. Canny Linguists; 20. Full) declined the offer for a tie-break round and agreed to share the spoils – bottles of wine for each player.
During the evening, members of the committee of the Ireland Stand raised money through sales at the bar (drinks, sandwiches and crisps) as well as by holding a raffle with a dozen prizes on offer.
This year’s International Bazaar – the largest continuous social / fundraising event of the international community – is being held over three days from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 November 2022, at LuxExpo The Box in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. The earlier-than-usual date is due to the Expogast culinary exhibition and competition taking place from 26 to 30 November 2022.
The next table quiz being held is the Green Pub Quiz organised by natur&ëmwelt, taking place next Thursday 20 October.
