Auchan Retail Luxembourg and SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde have teamed up to once again organise a back-to-school fundraising campaign, running from Thursday 11 to Saturday 27 September 2025 in the three Auchan hypermarkets (Kirchberg, Opkorn Differdange and Cloche d'Or) and Auchan Drive stores.
This joint solidarity action, organised with the support of Nhood Luxembourg and Iko Real Estate, has been ongoing since 2008 and once again will be dedicated to children in southern Ethiopia.
In 2025, the aim of this fund- and awareness-raising campaign is to support, as last year, “highly vulnerable” families living in the Oromia region, particularly the Borena area in southern Ethiopia. As Auchan and SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde noted, this region is heavily affected by population displacement, bearing the brunt of the effects of climate crisis, drought, floods, food crises and severely weakened communities, especially children, many of whom are affected by malnutrition.
A new multiyear project aims to address the complex and interrelated problems of hunger, poor nutrition, weak livelihoods and conflict in the Borena zone, with a focus on Moyale woreda (border district in southern Ethiopia). The project has a strong focus on nutrition-specific interventions, particularly for children under five and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
To support this campaign at the checkout, customers can either add the amount of their choice to their receipt, donate via the Auchan card or purchase one of the solidarity products displayed in the hypermarket school supply aisles (€1 per item will be donated to SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde).
Here, customers can also learn about SOS projects during the Solidarity Saturdays during which activities for children will be organised. These are scheduled for 13 September in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, 20 September at Opkorn Differdange and 27 September in Cloche d’Or Shopping Center.
In addition, SOS donation boxes will be installed in participating shops in the shopping centres in Luxembourg-Kirchberg and Opkorn Differdange.
On Tuesday 9 September 2025, Sophie Glesener, Director of SOS Villages d’Enfants Monde, kicked off this year's campaign with Manuel Filipe, Director of the Kirchberg Shopping Center, and Thibaut Lemonnier Leblanc, Management Controller of Auchan Kirchberg. "Hunger is a major problem worldwide, particularly in this region of southern Ethiopia, which is highly exposed to climate change and regularly faces major food crises. For the second consecutive year, we are committed to strengthening the resilience of families in this region and supporting them through a long-term project that promotes sustainable food and sustainable livelihoods," emphasised the partners, who have been working together for seventeen years.
They recalled that the 2024 campaign raised €12,379 for 150 vulnerable families in Borena and helped parents/guardians develop their own income-generating activities to meet their children's nutritional needs. Since 2008, more than €360,000 has been raised through their annual campaigns.
