On Monday 19 February 2024, Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg’s Minister for Gender Equality and Diversity, recognised the efforts of the municipality Steinfort concerning gender equality; she awarded the equality prize to the municipality’s representatives, including the Mayor, Sammy Wagner, Alderman Guy Erpelding and Jil Thurmes from the Equal Opportunities Department.
The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Ministry for Gender Equality and Diversity (MEGA).
Steinfort's efforts have been particularly recognised due to certain municipal priorities and concrete activities aimed at improving living together with a view to gender equality, such as their transversal municipal action plan which explicitly takes into account the gender equality component. Concrete actions included, among others, the promotion of women's sport, awareness-raising around men's health and events organised as part of Orange Week 2023 (an anti-violence campaign).
During the award ceremony, Yuriko Backes congratulated the representatives for their commitment and that of the entire municipal body and underlined that “the work for a more egalitarian living together between genders must be carried out at all levels of society” and that it is crucial to exchange good practices between municipalities.
The Mayor, Sammy Wagner, thanked MEGA for the award and reiterated the desire to continue the municipal commitment to equality, diversity and inclusiveness by opting for “a strategic approach oriented towards concrete results”.
The award is accompanied by an amount of €15,000 intended to finance activities promoting equality and diversity. Each year, the MEGA awards the equality prize to one or more municipalities which have made an exemplary commitment to better living together between genders on their territory.
