On Wednesday 17 September 2025, the Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in August 2025.

International Protection

A total of 130 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in August 2025 (compared to 149 in July 2025 and 153 in August 2024). To date this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 1,178 applications for international protection - up from 1131 received during the first eight months of 2024.

Authorities took 218 decisions on asylum applications in August, with 61 applicants being granted refugee status (74 in July).

In August, most applicants were Eritrean nationals (24), followed by Afghanistan (sixteen) and Syrian (thirteen) nationals, plus Ethiopian, Somalian and Guinean nationals (seven each).

So far in 2025, most applications have come from Eritrean nationals (178), followed by Syrian (153), Algerian (67) and Turkish and Afghanistan nationals (55 each).

Temporary Protection

A total of 78 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in August 2025 (down from 111 in July). So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 662 such applications.

Authorities took 73 decisions on temporary protection applications in August, with 65 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (97 in July).

Most applicants in August (75) were Ukrainian nationals; three applicants came from other unspecified countries.

Ukrainians have also represented the largest group (602) among applicants for temporary protection so far this year. Moreover, there have been applications from 22 Algerian nationals, nine Moroccan nationals, six Armenian nationals and 22 nationals of other unspecified countries.
