On Friday 24 January 2025, Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice confirmed that a total of 7,415 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality in 2024.
More than 7,000 people acquired citizenship last year following the naturalisation, option and recovery procedures.
The split was as follows:
- 6,108 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality by option;
- 194 people reclaimed Luxembourgish nationality (by recovery);
- 1,113 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality by naturalisation.
The ministry attributed the decrease in the number of people reclaiming (or recovering) Luxembourgish nationality compared to previous years to the fact that, as of 31 December 2018, it is no longer possible to submit a new application on the basis of Article 89 of the amended law of 8 March 2017. This article specifically allowed the direct paternal or maternal descendant of an ancestor who held Luxembourgish nationality on 1 January 1900, when the latter or one of his/her descendants had lost citizenship on the basis of previous legal provisions, to recover Luxembourgish nationality.
The ministry noted that the last files in progress concerning the cases referred to in Article 89 will be closed with the final deadline of 31 December 2025, in order to submit the declaration of recovery of Luxembourgish nationality before the civil registrar.
The ministry also shared a list of statistics showing the (foreign) nationality of those who obtained Luxembourgish citizenship in 2024. Among them were 606 Brazilian and 475 US citizens (both countries having historic ties with Luxembourg), as well as:
- 1,267 Portuguese nationals
- 975 French nationals
- 366 Belgian nationals
- 316 Italian nationals
- 307 German nationals
- 200 Russian nationals

- 140 Cape Verdean nationals
- 138 British nationals

Among the many other (foreign) nationalities represented, there were 22 Irish citizens who became Luxembourgers in 2024.
