On Saturday 26 October 2024, the Ukrainian community in Luxembourg gathered to protest against international bodies’ failures to prosecute Russian crimes against Ukrainian Prisoners of War and civilians in captivity.
According to LUkraine, recent UN reports reveal that over 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war have been subjected to torture including beatings, sexual violence, starvation and execution.
LUkraine’s President Nicolas Zharov and Inna Yaremenko, Representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in Luxembourg, signed an open letter demanding accountability.
The letter asks the Luxembourg government to "press for greater international accountability. We urge the government to hold Russia accountable for its flagrant violations of international law and to push the ICRC to fulfil its mandate. Luxembourg’s role within the UN and other multilateral organisations can serve as a platform to demand immediate corrective measures".
This letter is being sent to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Government of Luxembourg, Anne Calteux, Head of Representation of the European Commission in Luxembourg, and Olivier Maes, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the UN.
