On Wednesday 3 July 2024, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture confirmed the death of a wallaby called Sammy who was recently on the loose in the Grand Duchy.

ALVA reported that the wallaby, who had escaped his home near Echternach in early June, passed away on 25 June 2024 at his owner's home.

Analyses carried out by a private veterinary laboratory after his capture revealed that the wallaby was suffering from a bacterial disease that was difficult to treat, and this ultimately caused his death.

ALVA added that, at the time of Sammy's escape, this same illness was observed in two other wallabies belonging to the owner. One of them, a youngster, did not survive while the mother was able to be treated.

Concerning the three other kangaroos currently held by the owner, ALVA specified that after evaluation of the conditions of detention and examination of the case, Luxembourg's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture issued a permit to the owner.
