The Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) has published tourism figures for the recent Assumption weekend regarding the Grand Duchy's capital city.

Since 15 August (Assumption) this year fell on a Tuesday, it an opportunity to enjoy a long weekend for many people. Many visitors chose the capital as their destination, thus confirming a trend already observed at Easter and during Pentecost and which suggest a lively autumn for Luxembourg City.

Tourist welcome office

Over the four days, between Saturday 12 and Tuesday 15 August 2023, the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) recorded no less than 3,305 customers passing through the tourist reception office located at Place Guillaume II, an increase of 31% compared to the pre-pandemic situation (from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 August 2019).

According to the customers' country of residence, visitors from France made up a fifth of the tourists welcomed at the LCTO information office, with a total of 682 people, followed by 650 visitors from the Netherlands, 603 visitors from Germany, 173 visitors from Great Britain and Ireland, 160 visitors from Belgium and 153 Luxembourg residents. In short, nine out of ten visitors came from a European country.

Mobile tourist information “Jackets”

The “jackets”, comprising 28 young multilingual students aged 18 to 27, travelled around the capital to inform visitors and to distribute city maps and other leaflets during these four days of the long weekend. The result was an impressive total of 2,395 tourist contacts in the Upper Town, i.e. 29% more than during the same period in 2019.

In the streets, visitors from the Netherlands were the most numerous with a total of 400 people, followed by 387 visitors from France, 359 visitors from Germany, 194 visitors from Great Britain and Ireland, 151 residents of Luxembourg and 61 visitors from Belgium. Once again, nine out of ten visitors came from a European country.

Pétrusse casemates

Since their reopening in 2022, the Pétrusse casemates have always met with great success. Unsurprisingly, from 12 to 15 August 2023, the occupancy rate of available places was 100%.

Bock Casemates

The Bock casemates, accessible for free since 14 June, have resumed their place as an essential tourist spot in the city of Luxembourg. From 12 to 15 August 2023, only six places out of a total of 3,480 did not find takers.

Grand Ducal Palace

The guided tour of the Grand Ducal Palace always arouses a lot of interest and the figures recorded during the Assumption weekend showed that no less than 460 visitors were able to take part in 23 guided tours of the Grand Ducal Palace (available until 3 September).

Guided tours

Nearly 630 visitors availed of approved guides thanks to a varied programme of 43 guided tours organised by the LCTO during these four days. 35 guided tours with a private guide and eight over-the-counter tours took place throughout the weekend, including the “City Promenade”, the “Wenzel Circuit” or the “City Safari” tours.

The LCTO reported strong traffic on the luxembourg-city.com website, which recorded a total of 59,640 pages viewed by 32,839 visitors between 12 and 15 August 2023.
