On Tuesday 27 December 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth announced the Words of the Year: War and crisis - these subjects dominated the selection of the Word of the Year in 2022.

For the third time, on the initiative of the Centre for the Luxembourgish language (ZLS), and in collaboration with Radio 100.7 and RTL Luxembourg, a Word of the Year was sought in the Grand Duchy. With these results:

- Ukrainkrich (Ukraine war)
- Energiekris (Energy crisis)
- Präisdeckel (Price cap)
- Klimakris (Climate crisis)
- Index (Index

From the end of November to 12 December, anyone could submit their proposal for the word of the year 2022 to the Centre for the Luxembourg Language - either at the Walfer Book Days or via an online form. Around 335 proposals with around 170 different words arrived at the centre. Among them were a few suggestions that were mentioned only once, for example interjections (nondidjö, ojee, mega), neologisms (frítesten, lieben, früstück), rain words (mortjøt, zwackert) and words that were probably suggested because of their meaning content (LGBTQ, housing prices, boomer panic, polycrisis). Three words from the "youth language" have also been submitted: siuuu, sus and smash.

From the long-list, the ZLS team made a shortlist with the 20 most mentioned words and presented it to the jury. The jury included the Commissioner for the Luxembourgish Language, Marc Barthelemy, the President of the Council for the Luxembourgish Language (CPLL), Myriam Welschbillig, the programme director of Radio 100.7, Yves Stephany, the RTL.lu journalist Andy Brücker and Dr. Sara Martin representing ZLS.

In a first election, the list was reduced from 20 to 10 terms, in a second step from 10 to 5, with the result that Ukrainkrich (Ukraine war) as the Word of the Year 2022 is the successor of boosters (Word of the Year 2021) and Corona (Word of the Year 2020).

A look abroad

In Germany, the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache chose Zeitenwende (turning point) as the word of the year. The Russian invasion of Ukraine would have ushered in a new era. In places 2 to 5 came the war on peace, gas price cap, inflation pain and climate glue - thematically very close to Luxembourg's choice.

The Oxford Word of the Year is goblin mode. One is in that mode when one consciously behaves as one feels like, without looking at social norms or expectations.

The Merriam Webster dictionary opted for gaslighting, which refers to the manipulative use of false information, conspiracy theories and forgeries for one's own benefit.

For the Collins Dictionary, the word of the year is permacrisis, i.e. a crisis that denotes a prolonged period of instability and uncertainty.

And the site dictionary.com opted for the word woman, i.e. woman, in order to draw attention to the situation of women in the world and to the role of women in Iran.

The first official word of the year in Luxembourg was announced in 2020.
