The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (Corps grand-ducal d'incendie et de secours - CGDIS) has reported that a major fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday 6 December 2022.

Around 03:00 on Tuesday, a fire broke out on the first floor of a residential apartment building on Rue du Commerce in Kayl.

Several people took refuge on the roof of the building. The firefighters were able to quickly evacuate people from the roof before focusing their efforts on searching for potential missing victims. At the same time, numerous means were used to control the fire which had spread to the roof of the building and threatened to reach two adjacent residential buildings.

As of 06:00 on Tuesday morning, one person had died and ten were injured, several of whom were in a serious condition and were being treated by medical teams.

60 firefighters were mobilised to put out the fire and two ambulances from France supported the extinguishing work, which continued throughout the morning. A reception centre for uninjured victims was set up with the help of a psychological support group and the support of the municipality of Kayl in order to take care of around 30 members of families affected by the fire. Alternative accommodation is being arranged.
