Luxembourg's Prison Administration has announced that a fire broke out this morning at the Centre pénitentiaire de Luxembourg (CPL), otherwise known as Schrassig Prison.
At around 06:00 on Friday 18 June 2021, prison officers detected a fire at Schrassig Prison.
According to the Prison Administration, an inmate had set his cell on fire and suffered severe burns. A SAMU emergency response team treated the prisoner who was then transferred to the centre for treatment of major burns at CHR Metz-Thionville in France.
A second inmate was taken to Hôpital Kirchberg for smoke inhalation. Another inmate present in the vicinity as well as the prison officers who were on site at the time of the incident underwent a medical check-up and around ten prison staff were subsequently transferred to Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch in Esch-sur-Alzette for a more in-depth medical examination.
Support was provided by the Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (Corps grand-ducal d'incendie et de secours - CGDIS), which mobilised more than 50 firefighters to put out the fire and take charge of the medical component. The technical police of the Judicial Police Service (Service de police judiciaire) intervened on the spot and is currently investigating the origin of the fire.
The Deputy Director of the Prison Administration and the Director of Schrassig Prison were on the scene. The Ombudsman, in her mission as external controller of places of deprivation of liberty, was informed of the incident.
